VATTENFALL - ELECTRICAL PACKAGE CALCULATIONS AND DOCUMENTATION SERVICES HELP POWER VATTENFALL'S OFFSHORE WIND PROJECTS

Vattenfall is Denmark’s largest producer of onshore wind power and has won tenders for several large offshore wind farms, including the Near Shore Wind Farm and Kriegers Flak, which will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date. Vattenfall required knowledge and expertise on the electrical package for offshore wind turbines to successfully complete these projects.

Challenges

To complete the projects successfully, Vattenfall needed to find an engineering partner with the right skills to understand and supplement their organization and work flexibly with their employees. Additionally, they needed a partner who could provide information and calculations for the tender materials, documentation for electrical parts, and perform supplier screenings.

Solution

Vattenfall chose to work with DIS/CREADIS due to their expertise in electrical packages for offshore wind turbines and ability to supplement their organization with the right skills. DIS/CREADIS worked closely with Vattenfall’s Electrical Package Managers to provide information and calculations for cable dimensioning, cable length, electrical calculations, and switch gear ITT-documents. They also did supplier screenings, reviewed received quotations, and made documentation for electrical parts. DIS/CREADIS also contributed to time schedules and budget planning for the entire electrical package.

Why DIS/CREADIS

We needed knowledge and expertise on the electrical package for offshore wind turbines, and it was important to us that the right skills were added to our organization. We chose DIS/CREADIS because they met our requirements and because they have an understanding of how our organization works. The DIS/CREADIS consultants have been working on the project equally to our own employees and we have experienced that the DIS/CREADIS consultants are flexible and experienced in becoming part of an organization that is not their own”, said Bo Svoldgaard, Head of Engineering at Vattenfall.

Going forward, DIS/CREADIS will continue to support and advise Vattenfall on the entire electrical package and the interface for the turbines at the new wind farm Kriegers Flak. DIS/CREADIS will also work closely together with Vattenfall on Horn’s Reef 3 and the Near Shore Wind Farm, providing knowledge of electrical design for the foundations, solutions for cables between the shore and the turbines, electrical installations, and advice for Vattenfall’s Electrical Package Managers.

How SENSEWind accelerates time to market for Self-Erecting Nacelle and Service system with DIS/CREADIS’ concept development expertise

The costs of assembly, installation, operation, and maintenance of wind farms are rising, driven by increases in WTG (wind turbine generator) size and ideal wind farm placements moving to harder-to-access locations (e.g., deeper, more remote waters). For Onshore, the cost of just crane usage for a turbine installation can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars every day, and even more offshore where specialty vessels are required.

OVERCOMING WIND TURBINE COMPONENT AS-BUILT DATA LIMITATIONS WITH SITE SCAN AND 3D CAD MODELS

The wind industry is no exception to the multiple handoffs of service contracts that can occur between Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). One of our customers needed to develop a major component exchange procedure and maintenance documentation for an expired service contract of a wind turbine that had been taken over from one OEM by another. However, the customer faced limited access to as-built data, making this task challenging.

STIESDAL - GROUNDBREAKING FLOATING WIND TURBINE FOUNDATION DESIGNED TO BE COST EFFECTIVE, EASILY ASSEMBLED, AND SCALABLE

Renewable energy is poised to take center stage around the globe with wind generated power as one of its main sources. Until recently, wind farm projects have been limited to locations that are either onshore or in the shallow waters of the North Sea, the Chinese coastlines, and Eastern coast of the United States. Stiesdal, Shell, RWE, and TEPCO have partnered on the TetraSpar Demonstration Project to solve this problem and allow for wind generating turbines (WTGs) to be floated in deeper waters around the world. The TetraSpar Demonstration Project is a floating wind turbine prototype that is operational at the Marine Energy Test Centre (METcentre) near Stavanger, Norway.
